  • I am ridiculously tired.
  • I just spent an hour practicing my ukulele.
  • that laundry room sure comes in handy for late night rehearsals.
  • I recorded a song with my iphone. More than once, actually. Cause, I thought I had a good take, and then had to record the thing all over again cause my sixth note was flat. I prefer no notes being flat, thank you.
  • I met a super nice guy on the train. He made me laugh at the end of our conversation because he was all, “I think the really hot guy to your right was about to hit on you before we started talking. I saw him pop an altoid and everything. And then I think I scared him off–so sorry!” I assured him it was okay, that I was glad to have met a fellow musical theater pal. He jumped off at his stop, apologizing once more and saying over his shoulder, “Hope the hot guy wasn’t supposed to be your husband…!” Well, gosh, me too.
  • I was proposed to while waiting for my train tonight. What if one of these days I just called a guy on his bluff and said YES? And then started planning a wedding. Picking our kids’ names. Asking to borrow his credit card. It’d be like a tiny, subway-version of How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days.
  • I need to get new pictures. My agent says the headshot I have now looks Russian. And I guess, since I am not Russian, this is not desirable. She also says we need to work on my product. “You are a brand name,” she told me. “We need every one of your pictures to support that brand in a positive way.” Too bad my brand isn’t somehow connected with the Russian Tea Room. Cause then I probably wouldn’t have to get new pictures.
  • I think I have lost my YMCA card. But, that is sort of okay with me. Cause, really, the picture on that card does NOT support the brand I am trying to create. Not unless I am trying to convince the world that I have a perpetual cold and my nose is ALWAYS red.
  • I am meeting with a videographer tomorrow to talk about shooting a music video for me. “What are your ideas?” he asked me, upon our first talk. At which point I gave him some brilliant ideas that included it NOT be bad, NOT be cheesy, and that I DON’T look tired in it. I know, I should start my own production company, with innovative suggestions like that.
  • The guy at Pearl Studios did not charge me for printing some sides and music out today. Kind people make life wonderful, I think.
  • I was called back for something. I am not going. I turned it down. First time ever. It’s not what I want and I am listening to what’s in my heart right now and trusting that the right doors will open. And not even bothering with the doors that I don’t want to open.
  • I have three plantains and about a million suggestion via facebook on what to do with them. Perhaps I shall work on that tomorrow.

Annoying voice of your brother here… a steady broadway job might be really nice… Really nice! The recording career can come but take a long long time to pay. Kurt Cobain was still sleeping in his car when Nevermind hit #1 on the charts! Okay, Annoying voice of your brother out.

Also, I have to send you my video idea. It’s a scorcher.

    • jessica January 26, 2012

      send the video idea today!

plus, COULD BE true about the bway job…not so true about a job in Vermont for a show that doesn’t help my career…my agents agree with me. You do, too (you just don’t know the details).

Re: photopgraph for your brand, I would try to replicate the lighting in the subway video. 2 reasons: 1) you seem to have a chameleon-like quality, and you might as well look the way most people first saw and fell in love with you; and 2) that lighting brought out the line of your cheekbone–very flattering (just the opinion of a simple artist) :)

    • jessica January 26, 2012

“Chameleon-like quality”–hahaha thank you. and yes, people keep telling me that no picture/video of mine looks like another one. This is strange, I suppose;) and that is a good idea–except I think subways have florescent lighting…and florescent lighting steals my soul and makes me afraid I’ll get a migraine…:/ perhaps there is a way to recreate the scene without stealing my soul or giving me a migraine, though.

Annoying voice of your Pop here: have you eaten today? :) Proud of you. Praying for you.

    • jessica January 26, 2012

You asked that at 8:10 am! Unless I was sleep-eating, I had not eaten today yet!

      *but I will soon*

You are effin hilarious (I don’t want to curse on your blog; I wouldn’t want your mother reading it). You’re going to have to get used to men proposing. Face it, you are very crushable. In fact, I may, perhaps, allegedly, have a little crush on you myself. And I may, caught up in the moment, propose to you if I met you. I would also have a panic attack if you accepted. lol How would I explain that to my parents? “So Um, mom, this is Jessica. Just met her today. We’re getting married, and um, yeah. But she can sing and stuff, so, um, there’s that (while smiling awkwardly)”.
I love that you have the courage to pursue your dreams. I never had the courage to pursue mine. I regret that, especially since the big 4-0 is right around the corner. But at the risk of ganging up on you, the annoying voice of your brother is right. Although admirable, followig your heart does not a rent check make. Giving up a potential paying job? Very brave, and very crazy. And I’m so jealous.
On a less serious note, album title idea…Songs From The Laundry Room

thank you for respecting my mom, haha. and, yes, I think accepting a proposal from a stranger would be just as awkward as explaining the situation to your parents–probably not the best idea! Also, it’s never too late to follow your dreams. NEVER.

      • jason January 26, 2012

Goodness Rob, if you hung out with our mom, you’d know she speaks with the kind of language that would put sailors to shame.

        Just kidding, Mom.

        • Rob January 26, 2012

HAHAHA! My kind of mom! Well she seems to have done a great job with you guys. Go Mom!

        • Mom January 28, 2012

          Really, Jase!

I say you call their bluff. But make sure you have an escape route!

    Plantains are sssssssso good.

    • jessica January 26, 2012

      haha good advice.

also: I bet you’re way better at making plantains than me!

Jessica, at the risk of sounding like the unreasonable adult here, I think you should be following your dreams for as long as you can, and of course the little story comes along with my advice.

When I was in me early 20’s I had the opportunity to crew on a sail boat for a year long trip around the world. At the time I had a job, a car payment, and a little hottie for a girlfriend and despite wanting to go I decided that it was more important (and safer) to stick around instead. The thought of trying something and giving up what i thought important was kind of scary.

Now looking back, I still kick myself for not having the courage to get out of that comfort zone simply because it was the easiest and safest decision and I could make. Later hearing the stories about them going through the Panama Canal, about stops in Greece, Japan, and all the other exotic places that they visited really sucked, it was like listening to stories right out of a Jack London novel and I missed it all.
You are still young enough to recover from almost anything, if whatever you chose to do doesn’t work out, oh well, you move on to something else, but you won’t know until you give it a try.

    • jessica January 26, 2012

Hi Tim–thank you for sharing. I am sorry you have regrets…I think that regrets can teach us how to live better NOW, though, yes? Like, I bet you don’t miss out on opportunities anymore, huh? Thanks again for the encouragement; it means a lot to me.

  7. Mandy January 26, 2012

Hahahahaha. You were proposed to by a stranger? OF COURSE you were proposed to by a stranger!

“I am meeting with a videographer tomorrow to talk about shooting a music video for me.” <—- YAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!! Gosh I wish I lived near you because man do I work for cheap.

    • jessica January 26, 2012

I wish you lived closer, too. And NOT just cause you “work for cheap,” my friend! ;-)

      • Mandy January 26, 2012

Well, for the record, I do. :)

“I was called back for something. I am not going. I turned it down. First time ever. It’s not what I want and I am listening to what’s in my heart right now and trusting that the right doors will open. And not even bothering with the doors that I don’t want to open.”

I know I told you before to “ride the wave wherever it may take you”, but upon further reflection I’d like to congratulate you on your wisdom and choice not to go through a door that your heart tells you is not the right one to lead into the future you envision for yourself.

That sort of thinking will allow you to not just “ride the wave” but instead you can make that wave take you where you want to go!

Your good fortune has given you the liberty to pick and choose opportunities that come your way. Keep YOUR goals in mind and choose only what will take you there.

    Stay refreshing. :)

    • jessica January 28, 2012

Beautiful words, Yanick. Thank you–I so much appreciate it. And I am listening and I agree. :)
