I have done this for as long as I can remember.
Laid on the ground in hopes that an animal would come and lay down next to me.
Right now there are two big puppies that are only too happy to oblige.
They make me laugh out loud; I totally lol when they are around. They have big heavy paws and don’t quite know their own strength, though, which means that sometimes I am left a little bit scratched, but a lot happy.
And sometimes they smile,
and it looks like they are about to eat you.
But generally, that is not the case.
Still, it is good to warn Strider if you are about to jump over him while he is asleep and there is a bone nearby. Unfortunately, my niece learned that the hard way. And unfortunately for me, Strider likes to sleep right at the bottom of the stairs that lead to my living quarters (huh, living quarters. does anyone say that anymore?!). He’s like the troll under the bridge, if the bridge were stairs that were unavoidable in order for you to get home. So every day I do a little song and dance that starts with me saying, Oh Striiiiiiiiiiddddderrrrrr…I am commmmming downstairs so pleassssse don’t bite meeeeeeeee…! And then I hop over his big furry mass and so far it’s worked quite well because I haven’t been bitten.
Not by him, at least.
I have, however, been bitten by what seems like just about every bug from here to the ocean and back again. Including a few ticks who don’t want to be left out of the We Bit Jessica Small Creature Conference of 2010. Quick, you better get your tickets because from the amount of bites I am currently showcasing, I’m pretty sure the seats are selling out fast.
Oh, but the big doggies that live with me downstairs.
They surround me sometimes.

that picture where stride is smiling is hilarious haha. best dogs ever.
yes, he looks a little like Ed from the lion king–you know, that crazy hyena!
Awwwe, look at you and the babies! I love that Strider is so deep in sleep, that he might bite you if unwarranted! That princess Jessica sings a song to wake the animals, before climbing over the bridge! LOL! Cute Photos!
hahahah Princess Jessica!! Thanks for that, JR!!!
The puppy smiling is cute and scary at the same time. Very, “my grandma, what big teeth you have!”
that’s exactly what my mom said when we were looking at the pics! true story!
i love this!!!!!
thanks, Sare:)
These puppies! They are therapists and they haven’t had any counseling training.
I remember distinctly one day in the early part of these 6 months, I was so very sad. I was having trouble breathing. Trouble just living. I lay down on the floor in the living room. Just too tired to even think, but mourn, yes. And Strider lumbered up to me (you can only call what he does “lumbering.” And then plunked his heavy weight partially on top of me and put his paw over my heart. Then Arwen, a very sensitive, sweet dog, came sprinted over, smiled, and then she lay right next to me and put her paw over my heart. We three lay there for a long time. 2 ministering angels in dog coats. Healing.
aw, I love that story, Mom. they are totally cathartic, aren’t they? So glad you guys got them when you did!
that Strider is huge! they are lovely puppies. puppies?
hmmm. Well, I still call them puppies, but they are a year and a year and a half old…so, I don’t know–is that still a puppy?
never having had a dog, i’m not sure, but if they are puppies, they are mammoth puppies.
i love it!
They’re so cute!!!! And so are you!
and so are you! So. Much. Cuteness.
